There’s a new trend on the horizon. This trend consists of documentaries about raw food, and a time span of 30 days. Essentially what these documentaries are trying to fulfill is a continuation of the documentary Super Size Me, where, as you probbaly know, Morgan Spurlock eats solely at McDonald’s for 30 days. These documentaries start on the other end of the spectrum and take unhealthy Americans who have typically eaten the Standard American Diet (likely consisting of McDonald’s) , and have them eat only raw vegan food for 30 days. The goal is to show you the dramatic effects the raw diet can have on saving your health. People suffering from type 2 diabetes do a complete reversal: their blood pressure drops, they lose weight, feel happier, etc.

Now, I LOVE that the raw diet is entering the mainstream. I love that people are considering natural alternatives for getting healthy, versus succumbing to medication for the rest of their lives. I love that veganism is getting positive feedback from the mainstream culture. Unfortunately, I fear it’s being done in a cheesy, reality show manner. But heck, I guess that’s what the general population digs these days. I just hope this doesn’t result in people treating the raw diet like a fad diet. Granted, all I know of these documentaries is what I’ve read in magazines, and the trailers I’ve watched on YouTube. The documentaries are expected to release in the next few months. And I do plan on watching them when they finally come out. If you want a sneak peak, check out these links. (warning: the Raw for 30 Days trailor is 9 min. long)

Your point is well taken. (There’s a but coming.)
But, I think there’s a difference between “I’m going raw so I can fit into my skinny jeans again” and “I’m going raw so I can save my life.”
For someone with diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, or any other disease, improving one’s diet isn’t regarded as just a fad, it’s a necessity. There’s ample evidence now that a raw vegan diet reverses diabetes, type 2 for sure, type 1 in some cases, and in either type, reduces the dependence on insulin injections and medications.
My guess is people who make a change like this for vanity will not be as likely to stick to it, but someone who wants to stop sticking themselves with needles probably would.

You bring up a very good point, and I apologize if I came off as implying people with severe health issues see it as a fad. I think it’s wonderful for those that have such diseases to use the raw diet. I don’t think they are doing it as a fad. The people with type 2 are seen in the Raw for 30 Days documentary. However, what I didn’t mention is that the other documentary- Supercharge, is simply a woman who wants to look good in her Halloween costume. But I would think ultimately, she got a lot more out of the diet than she set in for initially. What I meant when I said I feared the raw diet would become a fad is simply that using a reality-show-like documentary could easily belittle how great the raw lifestyle really is.

Hi there, Emily : )
Thank you for posting about my rawcumentary! You’re correct that I got a lot more out of going raw than just fitting into a showgirl costume. I don’t have to wear glasses anymore. Chronic aches and pains are gone. I have more energy, more emotional calm, better mental clarity, better spiritual connection, better sleep. It’s been a miracle, but the beauty of it is that it’s a miracle that everyone can experience.
FYI, every week I produce a new short video on the subject of raw food: easy recipe demos, outtakes from the film and footage from my adventures & travels in the raw food world. You can check out the trailer and all the other resources directly on the film site:

Wow! That’s wonderful! I mean, horrible that you had so much pain for so long, but wonderful that raw food was able to cure you. And scary to think of all the people who suffer that don’t have to. One more reason I hope the raw diet makes it into the mainstream culture.
