Thanks for that information, Phillipe. That is very good to know, and surprising coming from Peta. Though Peta does make a valid point that 99.9% vegan is better than most, it's still unfortunate that consumers are supporting the use of animal products by buying these candies. When in doubt, stick with products that specifically list raw (unrefined) sugar. Natural stores are pretty good at carrying such items.

I wanted to express a word of caution about these candies. When i contacted these manufacturers they could no conclusively state that their sugar came from sources that were not filtered through activated carbon and if that activated carbon was from animal origon. They often switch and amalgamate sugars based on a cost effect ratio.

also from petas own site:

"*Items listed may contain trace amounts of animal-derived ingredients. While PETA supports a strict adherence to veganism, we put the task of vigorously reducing animal suffering ahead of personal purity. Boycotting products that are 99.9 percent vegan sends the message to manufacturers that there is no market for this food, which ends up hurting more animals. For a more detailed explanation of PETA’s position, please visit http://www.caringconsumer.com/labels.html."

I emailed them and they said that they felt that listing candies with refined sugar created better PR for veganism that only listen candies without.

The one i know for sure that does not have refined sugar are mambas. They use beet sugar.

Good luck all.

I called up Hersheys and asked int he glycerin was vegetable or animal derived, and the lady looked it up and said it comes from vegetable oil. This is for both twizzles, including the pull n peel.

Twizzlers ARE vegan. I even went to the grocery store to check for the umpteenth time, just to make sure. I checked every type of Twizzler at the store: Nibs, Pull 'n' Peels, Bites, Strawberry and Cherry twists... I even checked Red Vines, and though I cannot speak for how the sugar was refined with Red Vines, I know the rest of their ingredients are vegan. The only questionable Twizzler flavor was chocolate since one of the ingredients listed is chocolate. I have Twizzler Strawberry Twists in front of me now. I can take a picture if you'd like. The ingredients are: corn syrup; wheat flour; cornstarch; contains 2% or less of: palm oil; salt; artificial flavor; glycerin; citric acid; potassium sorbate (preservative); artificial color (red 40); and soy lecithin. No gelatin. And Peta, along with other vegan companies, approves Twizzlers so I'm pretty sure they did their research. Perhaps there are some generic twizzler-like candies that do contain gelatin- but none that I've seen. So I really have no idea where you are getting your information. But I hope this helps.

I would check that list carefully. Twizzlers are NOT vegan, they contain gelatin. Check your packaging!
