I would like to add another huge money saving tip -

Make your own nut milks! Its super duper easy and its soooooo much cheaper than buying soy/nut milks.

Soak a 1/4 up to 1/2 cup of raw almonds in a cup of water overnight. Drain and rinse almonds. If you feel like taking the time, slide the skins off (its super easy after they have soaked). Then take your almonds and put them in a blender with several cups of water. The reason I am so loose on the measurements is that its really up to your prefered taste. Blend for a while until the almonds are super ground up. Then filter them though some type of filter (coffee, paint strainer filter, or cheese cloth). Wring out the almond paste to get all the liquid out. Add a tiny bit of good quality vanilla flavor or leave plain. The almond milk will keep in the fridge for several days. Use the almond grounds in cookies or scones or even crackers.

I would also suggest making your own laundry soap which is super fun and saves money.

When the weather gets better and if your landlord or HOA approves, dry your clothing on a clothing line in the back yard.

Good post! As long as you're willing to put forth the effort, it is not too difficult to eat cheaply!

Your cool croutons idea reminded me of another really nice thing to do for soup accoutrements: Re-baked herby saltines! There is a recipe here (they're called ice water saltines) that calls for butter, but I've had great success with Smart Balance: http://warmolives.blogspot.com/2009/01/ice-water-saltines.html
